Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Historical Adventures by Mail

How does the weekly delivery work?

Every Monday, your child receives a physical letter in your mailbox from their historical pen pal. The character writes as if they're living in that time period and asks personal questions about your child's life.

How do children respond to letters?

Your child writes their response by hand on paper. You then take a photo of their response using your smartphone and upload it through our mobile-friendly form. No apps to download - it works in any web browser!

Do the characters really respond to what my child writes?

Yes! Our writers read every child's response and incorporate specific details into the next week's letter. If your child mentions their pet, asks a question, or shares something happening in their life, the historical character will remember and respond to it.

What ages is this appropriate for?

Our letters are designed for ages 8-16, with content complexity adjusted based on your child's age. Younger children (8-10) get simpler language and concepts, while older children (13-16) receive more complex historical details and moral dilemmas.

How historically accurate are the letters?

We work with historians to ensure accuracy in historical details, dates, locations, and period-appropriate language. While the characters are fictional, their experiences are based on real historical events and primary source documents.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes! There are no long-term contracts. You can pause or cancel your subscription at any time. If you cancel mid-series, your child's character will send a thoughtful goodbye letter to provide closure.

What if my child doesn't want to write back?

That's okay! While the interactive element enhances the experience, children can still enjoy receiving letters even if they don't respond every week. The characters will continue their story and occasionally ask if everything is okay.

Do you offer family discounts?

Yes! Contact us if you have 3 or more children. Each child gets their own unique character and storyline, but you save compared to individual subscriptions.

What historical periods do you offer?

Currently we offer Revolutionary War (12 weeks), Civil War (16 weeks), World War II (20 weeks), Westward Expansion (12 weeks), and Great Depression (8 weeks). More periods are in development!

What if a letter gets lost in the mail?

We track all deliveries and will immediately send a replacement letter if one goes missing. We also provide digital backup copies to ensure your child's story continues uninterrupted.

Is this educationally valuable?

Absolutely! Our service combines history education, reading comprehension, writing practice, and critical thinking. Many homeschool families use it to fulfill multiple curriculum requirements while keeping children engaged.

How do I help my child get started?

Read the first letter together and help them understand they're corresponding with someone from the past. Encourage them to answer the questions asked and share details about their own life. The more personal details they share, the more personalized future letters become!

What if I need billing help?
